Maastricht University

Introduction

Historic yet forward-thinking, typically Dutch yet multicultural and vibrant, Maastricht is a city of contrasts. Famous for hosting the 1992 treaty that created the European Union, Maastricht is committed to promoting itself as an international city. Maastricht University is a leading academic centre in Europe, welcoming students and professionals from around the world. We are consistently ranked among the best universities in the Netherlands.

Research at Maastricht University is focused on innovation and committed to the emerging knowledge society. Research is incorporated into every level of education, from bachelor’s studies to PhD candidacy. Maastricht University research advises national and international policy decisions, and our policy of “valorisation and enterprise” is designed to focus research on socially and economically relevant applications.

We seek talented students from across Europe and the world to study in Maastricht, and we reward hard work. The university offers a variety of scholarships, and the top 3% of our students each year have their tuition fees waived. In addition, a wide variety of honours programmes have been set up for excellent students.

Internationalism

Maastricht is one of Europe’s most international universities. Our faculties have extensive international partnerships and exchange programmes, and study abroad is required to finish some degrees. Internationalism as a theme rooted in all of our programmes, and the majority are taught entirely in English. You are encouraged to collaborate with other departments, disciplines, institutions and academics in Europe and abroad. We also have a broad selection of European oriented bachelor’s and master’s programmes in law, medicine, business, economics and humanities.

Innovative education

At Maastricht University everything revolves around you: the student. The university widely uses the Problem-Based Learning system. Students work in small tutorial groups. In close cooperation with the academic staff, your group is given a real-world problem. You collaborate to determine what you already know, establish learning goals, conduct independent research, and then come together to share what you have learned.

Our methodology is proven by the performance of our graduates. They are self-assured, independent and assertive professionals who are able to transition seamlessly between education and career.
